OPEN VESSEL: THE HOUSE AS LIGHT AND AIR by Richard Cole

How do we choose to dwell?  The architectural response to the site and brief is the result of a myriad of choices resulting in a particular way of dwelling in each place.

The nature of dwelling on four different sites in northern Sydney will be explored in this talk by Richard Cole of Richard Cole Architecture.  The competing aspects of prospect and refuge, transparency and privacy, public engagement and sanctuary are addressed in each of these houses.  Responding to difficult sites in beautiful locations, each house is a personal response developed for particular clients.  Built enclosures are deliberately perforated so that the surrounding environment is always present.  The careful development of character, poetic revelation and exposure to the site, landscape and elements are themes apparent through each of these works

The AOS series curator for the Pittwater area is David McCrae of Manfredini McCrae & Jansen.

This talk is presented by the Australian Institute of Architects with the generous support of Mark Tuckey Furniture.
