Residential Workshop Southern Highlands NSW.

This two day residential workshop will introduce you to the principles of mudbrick, cob and other forms of earth construction. You will develop an understanding and appreciation for the use of unfired earth as a building material and tool for design. This will incorporate a brief history of earth construction as well as current design principles and technologies. There will be an emphasis on how to create healthy and energy efficient earth buildings with climate responsive design.

The workshop will enable you to resource suitable earth based materials and develop these for a sustainable building project. Issues such as structural integrity, council approvals and building standards will also be examined during the workshop with practical examples for creating a smooth and efficient process from design to construction.

This workshop has a theoretical component as well as a hands-on section involving construction by participants of an earth based structure. The format will give a deeper understanding of the philosophies and techniques discussed in the teaching sessions. This practical experience will unlock the materials' unique properties and aesthetic possibilities.

Presenter Peter Hickson is a builder who specialises in earth building. He has completed over fifty earth projects, including four assignments in the Philippines, and has written many articles and presented papers on earth building. Peter is also involved with the research and testing of earth structures with the University of Technology Sydney.

“I believe Earth Building is appropriate, renewable and sustainable technology. It is the ultimate green building material. Ancient yet still relevant, it is what the world needs today to deliver buildings that are desirable, beautiful, comfortable, safe and durable without costing the earth.”  Peter Hickson More Info
