MADE by The Opera House

“Sydney Opera House is an international icon, instantly recognisable to people all around the world. It is one of the world’s greatest buildings of the twentieth century and a living testament to the creative mind of its architect, Jørn Utzon.”

In honour of the Sydney Opera House 40th Birthday celebrations in October 2013, Sydney Opera House Trust, together with a number of partners, has established MADE by the Opera House: a Multi-disciplinary Australian Danish Exchange program.

About MADE

MADE is a new program to promote international and cross-disciplinary interaction between architecture, engineering and design (of the built environment) students. As well as providing multidisciplinary design experience for both Australian and Danish students, the program will foster cultural relationships between the two countries. This is particularly fitting as it complements the role that Danish architect Jørn Utzon played in the innovative design and construction of the Opera House.

The Program

Each year, ten students in the field of architecture, engineering and design (in the built environment) will participate in the MADE program. Five students from an Australian university based in NSW and five students from a Danish tertiary institution will be selected for a six week exchange program to Denmark and Australia respectively.

Each year, Australian students will travel to Denmark in January-February, and Danish students will travel to Australia in July-August.

In 2014, the program for the Australian students will run from 6 January to 23 February. Broadly, the curriculum will include:

  • Placement at various engineering and/or architecture firms to work in a collaborative team
  • A visit to a performing arts or cultural centre
  • A visit to other significant works of architecture including works by Jørn Utzon
  • Completion of a collaborative multi-disciplinary project designed around the Utzon Design Principles

All instruction will be conducted in English. A Danish Steering Group representative will provide ground support to the students, including opportunities to meet other students.

Scholarship

Each Student will be provided with the equivalent of AU$6,000 to cover their international airfares, accommodation and living expenses during their visit. Students will be responsible for organising their own accommodation; however MADE will provide assistance through information and advice.

Applications

MADE is open to NSW university students who have completed their third year of an architecture, engineering or design (in the built environment) degree by 31 December 2013.

Applications will open on Monday 16 September 2013 and close on Tuesday 01 October 2013. Eligible students may apply by visiting the MADE website. The five successful Australian students will be notified in October and will be invited to attend the official MADE announcement, forming part of Sydney Opera House’s 40th Birthday celebrations of 25 October 2013.
