Hands on session at previous mudbrick workshop

Weekend Residential Workshop, Southern Highlands (South of Sydney) NSW Australia
Saturday 27th – Sunday 28th April 2013 Organised by Gudhara Holistic Sanctuary

10 Formal CPD Points for participation in this Workshop

What the workshop is about

This two day residential workshop for Architects and Design Professionals will introduce you to the principles of mudbrick, cob and other forms of earth construction. You will develop an understanding and appreciation for the use of unfired earth as a building material and tool for design. This will incorporate a brief history of earth construction as well as current design principles and technologies. There will be an emphasis on the insulative, thermal mass and health qualities of earth based construction components as part of an ecological efficient design approach.

The workshop will enable you to resource suitable earth based materials and integrate these into your building program either as a composit infill material or total envelope system.

Issues such as structural integrity, council approvals and buiding standards will also be examined during the workshop with practical examples for creating a smooth and efficient process from design to construction.

This workshop has a theoretical component as well as a hands-on section involving construction by participants of a small earth based structure. This format will give a deeper understanding of the philosophies and techniques discussed in the teaching sessions. This practical experience will unlock the materials' unique properties and aesthetic possibilities.

Learning Outcomes

- Develop a new set of design skills utilising a natural building material
- Understanding the range of applications and environments which best suit earth based materials
- Knowledge of the structural integrity and thermal performance of earth based building systems
- Practical hands-on skills in building a small earth structure
