SAW Bike Tour #1 - Three-Suburbs South

Dec. 13, 2014

9:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Town Bike Pitstop. 156 Abercrombie St Redfern 2016

We are architects and we conduct intimate city tours on bike and on foot that are open to the general public.

Years ago, the working-class suburbs immediately south and west of Sydney like Surry Hills, Redfern and Chippendale were associated in the bourgeois imagination with pestilence, poverty and crime. Over recent decades, these suburbs have been undergoing massive change with a steady influx of squatters, students, artists and other creative types who have built a thriving contemporary art, architecture and design scene. Sure enough, the money soon followed.

Sticking to bike paths, back lanes and quiet streets, the route and conversation will be structured around a number of contemporary projects, contested sites and politically charged themes including projects by cutting-edge architects FJMT, Collins and Turner, TZG, Smart Design, Neeson Murcutt and others. In addition to understanding why and how these areas are changing, you will discover inspiring architectural projects of all types including small back-lane renovations, public and cultural buildings, contemporary landscapes, social housing projects as well as the winner of the 2011 World Architecture Festival “Best House in the World”!

This is no touristic join-the-dots of familiar places. Its an exploration of a completely different (and much cooler, grittier and authentic) side of Sydney.
