On Saturdays throughout the Sydney Festival the School of Chemistry Building at the University of Sydney hosts public talks and rare films about modernist art and architecture to celebrate the exhibition Narelle Jubelin: Vision in Motion 

 

SATURDAY 14 JANUARY- Film screenings 

1pm: Bauhaus Media Art (1931, approx 40 mins)
A selection of abstract, experimental shorts from the Bauhaus, including early works by Hans Richter and Werner Graeff
Wo wohnen alte Leute (Where Old People Live) (1931, Ella Bergmann-Michel, 13 mins)
A celebratory documentary on a modernist home for the aged in Frankfurt.

2pm: The Fountainhead (1949, King Vidor, 114 mins)
Gary Cooper stars as Howard Roark, an idealistic skyscraper architect who refuses to compromise his vision

 

SATURDAY 21 JANUARY- Film screenings

1.30pm: House: After Five Years of Living (1955, Charles & Ray Eames, 11 mins)
Kaleidoscope Jazz Chair (1960, Charles & Ray Eames, 7 mins)
Two playful short films by design pioneers Charles & Ray Eames, featuring the renowned Eames House and Fiberglass Chairs

2pm: PlayTime (1967, Jacques Tati, 124 mins)
Jacques Tati’s classic satire on modernist architecture, urbanisation and tourism.

 

SATURDAY 28 JANUARY- Talks and film screenings

1pm: Screenings of short films by Charles & Ray Eames, Ella Bergmann-Michel and from the Bauhaus

2pm:   A conversation led by architectural historian Trevor Howells with architect Keith Cottier AM (Allen Jack + Cottier)  on his work and the Seymour Centre

3pm: A conversation led by architectural historian Sascha Crocker and NSW Government Architect Peter Mould with architect Ken Woolley on his award winning building, Fisher Library

4pm: Repeat screening of short film program

All events are free

The exhibition consists of a 'modernist walk' taking in five sites across the University. The ‘walk’ is self-guided and circular – there is no starting or end point. Follow the yellow dots on the pavement to navigate between the five sites:

Tin Sheds Gallery window, Verge Gallery windows, and Sci-Tech Library windows (visible from the outside, 24 hours per day).

School of Chemistry Building lecture theatre foyers (enter to the side of the main building) and the University Art Gallery. Open: Monday to Friday: 10am – 4pm, Saturday: 1-5pm (January only).
