Poly is an interior pavilion commissioned by Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation. The pavilion was first shown between March and May 2014, and is returning by popular demand for a second showing in August 2014 to coincide with Sydney Design 2014.

Poly is conceived as a collective pavilion. Like a community it is both one and many. The pavilion is made up of a series of protective but outward-looking hooded structures that can each be moved to create an ever-changing urban microcosm.

As basic shelter, Poly blurs the boundaries between industrial design and architecture. Neither function specific nor site specific when alone, the group can be rearranged to suit a series of planned and unplanned events. Each hooded structure has been proportioned to provide shelter for two people, and is shipped flat and folded together on site by hand from aluminium composite panels. The interior of each structure has been lined with felt. Wheels allow visitors to move each hood into various social or solo arrangements.

Poly demonstrates the potential of digital prefabrication to efficiently produce many structures from a single material stockpile using a single machine. Such designs can be simply downloaded from a digital library of open-source patterns, eliminating the need for expensive tooling and allowing a fast-response, decentralised model of production.

The pavilion has been constructed from excess stock composite aluminium sheet. These sheets were left overs from various commercial projects and would otherwise have been sent off for recycling. The sheets came in a random assortment of colours and have been turned inside out so that the visible face is in fact the backside, with a milled aluminium finish.

The pavilion has been proposed as a venue for the staging of a series of events including talks, meetings, workshops and film screenings. For each event the pavilion takes a new form, transforming the gallery space in the process. The installation will remain in the gallery beyond Sydney Design until October 4, 2014 Visit the SCAF website for event details.
