New Oxford St design gallery

In the coming weeks I will be looking at informal city experiences that have the power to transform the city from the bottom up.  Often occurring in the voids leftover by the conventional urban fabric,  these unexpected gap-filling, low cost initiatives are potential agents for positive change in the city.  Where larger plans have left holes, the intriguing and unexpected can be found in laneways, event spaces, temporary galleries and so on.

I will seek out these genuine attempts to make positive social + urban change, and examine in more detail the role that the informal, marginal and creative practice plays in making the city.
I am fortunate enough to be among the successful applicants for a temporary lease in Darlinghurst, as part of the City of Sydney's initiative to revitalise lower Oxford St. This effort to build a creative hub is where my curiosity begins.

During my time as guest commentator, my (informal) list of things to see and do includes: New design stores, galleries and studios on Oxford St, Jurassic Lounge at the Museum of Australia, Cockatoo Island Film Festival, Scale Architecture's new Darlinghurst laneway house, an interview with Gaffa's Arcade Project directors, getting inside the City of Sydney to see upcoming plans for our laneways, and an inside look at Fraser's studio at UTS Broadway.

Hi Rob,

We are at 66 Oxford St, Darlinghurst. There are 3 new temporary ground floor retail spaces now open - He Made, She Made, Oxford St Design Store and Platform 72.

Hi Matt,
Where can I find more information about the Oxford St spaces? Where are they?

In the final hours leading up to the launch of the Oxford St spaces, I find myself amongst last minute fit out jobs running into the early hours of the morning, while fresh faced creative entrepreneurs give me a sneak preview of their products, as they anxiously prepare to open their doors to the public.

The Lord mayor will visit tomorrow and everyone is intent on making their best impression. I will be talking to my neighbours in the coming days and post my findings here.
